Available products and installation requirements vary by model year and body style.

Classic Chevrolet Fuel Tank Applications

1928-1940 Chevrolet: Our catalog includes coated-steel replacement fuel tanks for selected Chevrolet passenger cars, including 1928-1932 models, 1934-1935 Standard models, 1935-1936 Master models, 1937 models, 1938-1939 models, and 1940 models. These tanks feature vehicle-specific dimensions and construction, with available features including internal baffling, corrosion-resistant coatings, and provisions for compatible fuel-level sending units.

1941-1948 Chevrolet: The Tanks, Inc. 48R-CG replacement fuel tank provides an original-style solution for compatible Chevrolet passenger cars. This die-stamped galvanized steel tank features a 16-gallon capacity, a fuel pickup in the original location, and provisions for compatible five-hole fuel-level sending units. It is intended for conventional fuel systems; separate tank configurations are available from the manufacturer for EFI applications.

1949-1952 Chevrolet: Our catalog includes the 51CPS polyethylene fuel tank and the 51CGX coated-steel extra-capacity tank. The polyethylene tank features heavy-wall construction, internal baffling, and provisions for compatible fuel delivery components. The steel tank provides an alternative for customers seeking traditional metal construction with additional capacity.

1953-1954 Chevrolet: The 53-CGX extra-capacity steel fuel tank features internal baffling, a reservoir tray, and provisions for an optional in-tank fuel pump. This configuration can support traditional fuel delivery systems or appropriately designed modern fuel injection conversions.

1955-1957 Chevrolet: Our catalog includes EFI-ready fuel tanks for 1955-1956 Chevrolet applications (Part #556-CG) and 1957 Chevrolet applications (Part #570-CG). We also offer the 1957 original-style steel replacement tank (Part #570-A). Additional Tri-Five Chevrolet fuel tank options can be found in our dedicated 1955-1957 Chevy Fuel Tanks category.

Fuel Tank Construction & Features

Tanks, Inc. manufactures replacement and custom fuel tanks using materials and construction methods suited to classic vehicle applications. Depending on the selected product, features may include:

  • Die-stamped steel construction with corrosion-resistant alloy or galvanized coatings.
  • Heavy-wall high-density polyethylene construction on selected models.
  • Internal baffling to help reduce fuel movement during acceleration, braking, and cornering.
  • Original-style mounting dimensions and filler arrangements for compatible vehicles.
  • Standard or increased fuel capacity depending on the application.
  • Provisions for compatible fuel-level sending units and pickup tubes.
  • Optional in-tank electric fuel pump provisions on selected EFI-compatible tanks.
  • Reservoir trays or specialized internal baffling for improved fuel delivery on applicable models.

Not every feature is included with every fuel tank. Fuel capacity, construction material, mounting hardware, filler neck arrangement, and compatibility with electric fuel pumps vary by part number.

Restoration & EFI Conversion Applications

For original restorations, a properly matched replacement fuel tank can help maintain factory-style fitment while replacing an aging, corroded, or damaged tank.

For modern restomods, converting to electronic fuel injection requires additional consideration of fuel pump capacity, fuel pressure regulation, supply and return lines, filtration, tank venting, and electrical controls. EFI-compatible tanks may accommodate in-tank electric fuel pumps, but pumps, sending units, and other fuel system components may need to be purchased separately.

Proper fuel tank selection also depends on body style and original vehicle configuration. Sedans, coupes, business coupes, station wagons, Nomads, and sedan delivery models may have different fuel tank requirements. Always verify the manufacturer's stated fitment before ordering.
