Squid's Rod Shop offers Tanks, Inc. replacement fuel tanks for 1941-1948 Dodge and Plymouth passenger cars and 1949-1951 Mercury automobiles. Our current catalog includes alloy-coated steel fuel tanks featuring internal baffling, provisions for aftermarket fuel-level sending units, and compatibility with optional electric fuel pump systems for properly designed EFI conversions.

Classic Dodge, Plymouth & Mercury Fuel Tank Applications

1941-1948 Dodge & Plymouth Fuel Tank (Part #48DP-A): A 15-gallon replacement fuel tank manufactured from aluminized steel for corrosion resistance. The tank features a bolt-on filler neck with an angled fuel-resistant connecting hose, internal baffling to help minimize fuel sloshing, and a 3/8-inch NPT internal fuel pickup connection.

Additional features include electronically seam-welded construction, leak-tested seams, compatibility with aftermarket fuel-level sending units, and universal mounting straps. The tank measures approximately 30 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 8 inches high.

The 48DP-A also accommodates compatible Tanks, Inc. GPA Series in-tank electric fuel pumps for electronic fuel injection conversions. When installing a GPA Series pump, the original internal pickup connection must be properly plugged according to the manufacturer's instructions.

1949-1951 Mercury Fuel Tank (Part #49M-G): An 18.5-gallon replacement fuel tank designed for compatible 1949-1951 Mercury passenger cars. Manufactured from die-stamped alloy-coated steel, this tank retains original-style dimensions while incorporating internal baffling, a fuel pickup connection, and provisions for aftermarket fuel-level sending units.

Features include caged mounting nuts, a 2-1/4-inch outside-diameter filler neck, and compatibility with standard five-bolt aftermarket fuel-level sending units. For electronic fuel injection conversions, this tank can be modified to accept a compatible Tanks, Inc. PA Series in-tank fuel pump retrofit module.

Fuel Tank Construction & Features

Tanks, Inc. replacement fuel tanks incorporate features designed to improve fuel system reliability while maintaining compatibility with classic vehicle applications.

  • Aluminized or alloy-coated steel construction for corrosion resistance.
  • Vehicle-specific dimensions and mounting arrangements.
  • Internal fuel baffling to help control fuel movement during acceleration, braking, and cornering.
  • Compatibility with appropriately selected aftermarket fuel-level sending units.
  • Original-style filler neck arrangements for compatible vehicles.
  • Fuel capacities of 15 gallons for the Dodge and Plymouth tank and 18.5 gallons for the Mercury tank.
  • Optional electric fuel pump integration for properly engineered EFI conversions.
  • Leak-tested construction for dependable operation.

Fuel pumps, fuel-level sending units, and certain installation components may be sold separately. Specifications and included hardware vary by part number.

Fuel-Level Sending Unit Compatibility

Both tanks accommodate compatible five-bolt aftermarket fuel-level sending units. Proper sender selection requires matching the electrical resistance range to the vehicle's original or aftermarket fuel gauge.

The factory-style fuel gauge resistance range for these applications is commonly 73-10 ohms. The appropriate sender must also be adjusted for tank depth and float clearance. For tube-style or reed-switch sending units, Tanks, Inc. specifies an 8-inch sender for the 1941-1948 Dodge and Plymouth tank and a 6-inch sender for the 1949-1951 Mercury tank.

Original sending unit access locations and tank mounting arrangements should be checked before installation. Modifications may be necessary depending on the specific vehicle and fuel system configuration.

Restoration & EFI Conversion Considerations

For traditional restorations, a properly selected replacement fuel tank can help maintain the original appearance and operating characteristics of a classic vehicle while replacing a damaged, corroded, or leaking factory tank.

For modern restomods and custom builds, converting to electronic fuel injection requires additional consideration of fuel pump capacity, operating fuel pressure, fuel pressure regulation, supply and return lines, filtration, tank venting, and electrical integration.

The 1941-1948 Dodge and Plymouth tank can accommodate compatible GPA Series in-tank electric fuel pumps. The 1949-1951 Mercury tank requires a compatible PA Series retrofit module for an in-tank EFI pump conversion. These fuel pump systems have different mounting requirements and should not be considered interchangeable.

Applications involving LS, LT, Ford Coyote, or other modern fuel-injected engines require a properly engineered fuel delivery system matched to the engine's pressure, flow, and electrical requirements.
