Replacement Fuel Tank Features

Tanks, Inc. replacement fuel tanks are manufactured with features suited to specific classic Ford truck applications. Depending on the selected product, available features include:

  • Die-stamped alloy-coated steel construction for corrosion resistance.
  • Vehicle-specific mounting dimensions and filler configurations.
  • Fuel capacities ranging from 16 to 19 gallons.
  • Internal baffling on selected early Ford and F-100 applications.
  • Compatible fuel pickup and fuel-level sending unit provisions.
  • Model-specific tank venting and rollover valve arrangements.
  • Optional in-tank electric fuel pump compatibility on selected early Ford tanks.
  • Original-style appearance when installed in compatible applications.

Specifications, included hardware, and installation requirements vary by part number. Fuel-level sending units, filler neck components, mounting hardware, and connecting hoses may need to be purchased separately.

Ford Truck Fuel Tank Fitment & Compatibility

Proper fuel tank selection requires confirming the vehicle's model year, chassis configuration, mounting arrangement, filler neck location, fuel pickup provisions, and venting requirements.

For 1973-1979 Ford trucks, particular attention should be given to the original fuel tank vent location and rollover valve arrangement. The F1A and F1B tanks are not interchangeable solely based on model year. The original tank configuration should be verified before ordering.

Some F-250 four-wheel-drive Highboy and F-350 applications have different frame dimensions that can affect fuel tank fitment. Frame width and installation clearance should be checked before selecting a replacement tank.

Restoration & EFI Conversion Considerations

For traditional restorations, a properly matched replacement fuel tank can help maintain the original appearance and fuel system configuration while replacing a deteriorated or damaged original tank.

For custom Ford trucks and modern restomods, converting to electronic fuel injection requires additional consideration of fuel pump capacity, fuel pressure regulation, supply and return plumbing, filtration, tank venting, and electrical controls.

Selected early Ford steel tanks can accommodate optional in-tank electric fuel pumps. Tanks, Inc. also manufactures dedicated EFI-ready fuel tank configurations for certain later Ford trucks that are not currently listed in this category.

When planning a Ford Coyote, LS, LT, or other modern engine conversion, fuel tank selection should be coordinated with the engine's fuel pressure, flow, and electrical requirements. A conventional replacement fuel tank should not be assumed to support a high-pressure EFI system without additional engineering or modifications.
