Classic Ford Fuel Tank Applications
1928-1929 Ford Model A (Part #28EZ): A polyethylene apron-fill saddle tank kit designed to mount outside the frame using running board brackets. The system includes two 7-gallon tanks, providing a combined 14-gallon capacity. Features include heavy-wall polyethylene construction, filler caps, a fuel tank switching valve, and provisions for compatible fuel-level sending units.
1930-1931 Ford Model A (Part #30EZ): A similar polyethylene saddle tank system designed for 1930-1931 Ford passenger cars and pickups. Each tank holds approximately 6.5 gallons, providing a combined 13-gallon capacity. The kit includes the necessary saddle tank configuration and switching components.
1932 Ford: Our catalog includes the original-style alloy-coated steel tank (Part #32Z-S, listed as 32-ZS) and the stainless steel tank (Part #32SS-S). Both offer an 11-gallon stock-style capacity. These tanks provide traditional exterior styling with modern fuel pickup, venting, and sending unit provisions. Compatible electric fuel pump options are available for properly designed EFI conversions.
1933-1934 Ford: Available options include the heavy-wall polyethylene fuel tank (Part #34PSN) and the alloy-coated steel fuel tank (Part #34G). These configurations offer different construction materials while accommodating traditional street rod installations. The steel tank features internal baffling, a reservoir tray, and provisions for an optional in-tank electric fuel pump.
1933-1937 Ford Pickup & Selected Passenger Applications: Part #34G-PT is a coated-steel tank designed primarily for 1933-1937 Ford pickups, but it also fits the 1934 Ford Victoria and certain sedan delivery applications. This 16-gallon tank features internal baffling and provisions for an optional in-tank electric fuel pump.
1935-1936 Ford: The alloy-coated steel fuel tank (Part #35G) is designed for compatible 1935-1936 Ford passenger cars. It features internal baffling, a reservoir tray, a 16-gallon capacity, and provisions for an optional electric fuel pump.
1938-1940 Ford: Part #40G is a 16-gallon alloy-coated steel fuel tank featuring internal baffling, a fuel reservoir tray, and provisions for compatible fuel-level sending units. This tank can support traditional carbureted fuel systems or an appropriately designed EFI conversion using additional components.
1941-1948 Ford & 1939-1948 Mercury: Part #48G is a 17-gallon galvanized steel fuel tank designed for compatible Ford and Mercury passenger cars. Features include internal baffling, a reservoir tray, and provisions for optional in-tank fuel pumps and aftermarket fuel-level sending units.
Fuel Tank Construction & Features
Tanks, Inc. manufactures fuel tanks using different materials and construction methods to accommodate classic vehicle applications. Depending on the selected product, available features include:
- Die-stamped alloy-coated steel construction for corrosion resistance.
- Stainless steel construction on selected traditional hot rod applications.
- Heavy-wall polyethylene construction on Model A saddle tanks and selected early Ford models.
- Internal fuel baffling to help reduce fuel movement during acceleration, braking, and cornering.
- Original-style mounting dimensions and filler arrangements for compatible applications.
- Fuel capacities tailored to specific vehicle configurations.
- Provisions for compatible aftermarket fuel-level sending units.
- Optional in-tank electric fuel pump compatibility on selected steel and stainless steel tanks.
Not every feature is available on every fuel tank. Tank construction, capacity, mounting arrangement, fuel pickup configuration, filler neck requirements, and EFI compatibility vary by part number.
Model A Saddle Tank Considerations
The 1928-1931 Ford Model A saddle tank systems require special consideration during installation. These tanks mount outside the frame rails and require modifications to the splash aprons for fuel filler access.
Because of their mounting arrangement, these saddle tanks are not compatible with the original mechanical brake system. They are also not recommended by the manufacturer for fuel-injected vehicles. Proper brake system, fuel plumbing, and chassis compatibility must be confirmed before selecting these tanks.
Restoration & EFI Conversion Applications
For traditional restorations, a properly matched replacement fuel tank can maintain the original appearance of a classic Ford while replacing an aging, corroded, or damaged tank.
For custom hot rods and restomods, selected Tanks, Inc. steel and stainless steel tanks can accommodate optional in-tank electric fuel pumps for modern electronic fuel injection systems. EFI conversions require proper coordination of fuel pump capacity, fuel pressure regulation, supply and return plumbing, filtration, venting, and electrical controls.
When planning an LS, LT, Ford Coyote, or other modern engine conversion, fuel tank selection should be coordinated with the engine's specific fuel delivery requirements. Additional components may be necessary to provide the correct fuel pressure, flow capacity, and fuel-level instrumentation compatibility.
